19mm Ancient Coin with Nike & Man-Headed Bull

$4,500.00

A rare and intriguing coin featuring the profile of the siren Parthenope, who according to Greek legend, threw herself into the sea and drowned when her siren song failed to entice Odysseus.  When her body washed ashore at Naples on the island of Megaride, her tomb was built and named the "Constraction of Sirens."  Upon the arrival of people from the city of Cumae, the island was named Parthenope in her honor.  The coin's reverse shows the River God and Father of the Sirens, Achelous, who often took the form of a bull.  Here in this coin he is depicted with a man's face and body of a bull.  Nike flies above him, crowning his head.
