A paper bag of bread, soft figs, juicy slices of melon. A box of macarons she'd chosen that morning lavender and passion fruit.

The boat rocked gently in the cove below Ravello, sails lowered, sun slipping west.
The air was dense and close, their skin still salted from an earlier swim.

They ate leisurely and indulgently, leaning against striped cushions faded by summers past. She paused for prosecco, her ring catching the fading light just so. He’d insisted upon it in the tiny shop earlier, said it was made for her, and now it had already become an irreplaceable token of their time together. 

Neither of them said it, but the end was near.
Trains would leave, flights would board. Hotels would be stripped of flowers and shuttered for the season.
