17mm Ancient Coin with Stallion

$4,100.00

From Thessaly, the horse-country of ancient Greece, comes this silver hemidrachm, struck in Trikka between 480 and 420 BC. On the obverse, a youth grasps the horns of a bull, a moment frozen in silver that recalls both athletic contest and mythic struggle. On the reverse, the forepart of a horse emerges  alongside the inscription TRIKKAION. In Thessaly, land of centaurs, healers, and legendary horsemen, such imagery spoke to identity itself, for here horses were a source of renown, wealth, and deep cultural pride.

To see this coin now is to glimpse that world, where myth and daily life mingled on mountain plains and in sacred valleys. Its survival across twenty-five centuries this lovely piece a lasting thread between past and present

Obv: Youth standing right, holding the forepart of the bull by it's horns. Rev: Forepart of a horse right, with an in part retrograde inscription that reads TRIKKAION, starting at the upper right. Sear-2226. BCD Thessaly 135IV
