Billy Cook: from Dreamer to Big Leaguer
The Design: Big Ideas & Plenty of Prototypes
Billy, now outfitted as a Pittsburg Pirate, was ready to celebrate his achievement with a necklace (the real bling!) that incorporated several foundational elements of his life - the Colorado mountains at sunset, the outline of Pittsburg's Roberto Clemente Bridge, a photo of himself pointing skyward after his first MLB homerun, key dates and a religious scripture. I'll be frank, including this many elements can quickly push a design into visual overload and wildly oversized proportions, which we usually advise against. But if you've watched a Major League game lately, you know these are some big, swaggy guys - and there was zero doubt from me about Billy's physicality and charisma carrying off a bold, substantial necklace. And so my team and I swung for the fences.
The challenge was creating a cohesive, beautiful design wherein each sentiment is its own design detail while also folding effortlessly into a larger story. A few failed designs and wonky prototypes later we were finally able to achieve the perfect look. The pendant consists of three separate yet interlocking tags made of solid 18k grey, yellow and rose gold. Each tag is adorned with its own images and meaning, and when fitted together form a dimensional, sculptural narrative. We absolutely love it.

It's Personal
We've all watched the highlights - bats flipping, chains swinging, the flash, the flex. So much swagger and so much fun. A Baseball Purist may see it all as spectacle. A Baseball Lover though, would never write this off as empty showboating.
I learned the game the way a lot of kids do - tossing the ball back and forth with my dad until it got too dark outside to see and then begging to keep playing anyway. Baseball was a simple bond. Later, the game took me further than I imagined for myself - a pitching scholarship meant college was possible.
Then came the familiar next chapter: tossing the ball around with my own kiddo, eventually finding myself in a 10U dugout desperately trying to help their parents make sense of a sport built around failure. Baseball has a way of exposing weakness, usually in public and often at the worst moment. Even the best players navigate it.
Last weekend, Laina and I watched from the stands as our son took to the mound to pitch his final college innings. Senior night had us reflecting on the very early years of lost cleats and lectures about effort, and the natural way those conversations shifted into mature discussions about handling pressure, growing through adversity, and honoring those around you - talks that are the heart of baseball. To be both parent and fan is an honor, and senior night had us cheering and weeping with pride.

Wear it With Your Chest
John Updike wrote " there is nowhere to hide when the baseball's spotlight swivels your way." You don't need to be a player to understand the sentiment. The game shows you who you are - and it's not when you're, as the kids say, throwing gas or hitting bombs.
Misread a routine fly ball? Leave your heater up over the plate? Strikeout looking in three pitches with the bases loaded? Now what? How do you adjust and carry on with dignity and humility. Baseball as metaphor for life is hard to miss.
While Purists roll eyes at all the MLB flossing - I pause. Perhaps it's my unique relationship to both jewelry and baseball, but I've never seen the bling as distraction or ego. To me it looks like protection. And that impulse to decorate achievements and steel against adversity isn't new, it's human. A meaningful piece of jewelry is rarely just adornment. In the context of baseball, it is a talisman - a balm on the sting of defeat and a wager on the future.
So when Tatis pops that iced out Cuban-link after sending one into the stands? I'm all in - let's go! But don't get it wrong, that bling is 100% body armor. As a jeweler I admire the build. As a Fan I love the flair. And as a baseball Dad, I understand the importance of wearing something close to your chest that reminds you of your intent and character.
This was our objective with Billy's necklace - to craft a personal object of celebration grounded in intention - a talisman that will travel with him through the call ups and the comebacks, the gritty wins, the tough losses. It means a lot to craft a piece that holds this purpose. We are honored. Thank you, Billy. Let's Cook!
