Lion Ring with Ancient Intaglio
We are thrilled to bring the ancient Roman intaglio into a modern context. Carved between the first and third centuries CE, the stone bears the image of a lion, rendered with the poise favored in Roman glyptic art. The lion stood as a symbol of wisdom, power, courage and dignity throughout the Mediterranean world, appearing on military standards, civic monuments and personal seals, marking authority and self-possession.
To place an antiquity into a contemporary ring design is to acknowledge the long narrative it carries. This intaglio may once have been pressed into wax to seal letters or documents, its image serving as both identification and personal emblem. It has likely traveled through many hands before reaching our workbench. Fascinating.
