She’d claimed a café table on the edge of the square, close enough to watch the ebb and swell of the crowd but far enough to remain an enigma. The afternoon hummed, waiters weaving between tables, a child darting after a paper ball, the sharp hiss of milk steaming somewhere behind her.

Her espresso arrived in a porcelain cup barely larger than her thumb, rich and fragrant, followed by a plate of macarons stacked like little jewels; citron like the color of her earrings, rose and pistachio. She bit into one, the shell giving way to cream.

Somewhere, an accordion began to play. She leaned back letting the sound fold into the clink of cups and the low murmur of voices, the square spinning slowly around her.
