And watched the street scenes unfold like a film: deliveries trundling over cobblestones, a priest lifting his cassock to step from curb to curb, a child in patent shoes chasing after a ball.

Her espresso arrived in a porcelain cup barely larger than her thumb, rich and fragrant, followed by a plate of macarons stacked like little jewels rose pistachios and citron. She bit into one, the shell giving way to soft center.

The heavy gold band at her finger caught the sun as she lifted the cup to her lips. The morning belonged entirely to her.

Somewhere, an accordion began to play.
