She had left the ring on the reading room desk before coffee. Sunlight crossed the wood in a slow band, reaching the sapphire by midmorning. A worn book of devotions lay open nearby, its pages bowed at the spine. Beside it stood a vintage bottle of L’Heure Bleue - a few drops still in the glass.

The ring remained among these familiar objects. Lavender sapphire. White diamonds. Satin-finished gold. When she was not wearing it, the ring lived here, returned to the same tableau of bottle, book, and the small scatterings of other cherished possessions.
