The specimen drawer slid open with a familiar ease. Rows of carefully pinned insects rested beneath the glass. Jewel beetles, swallowtails, iridescent moths collected over decades. She paused over a small green specimen, no larger than the tip of her thumb. Even after all these years, the color was startling.

Her fingers moved absently to the emerald charm at her neck. The stone layered easily among the other chains she wore, and like her beetle beneath the glass, it inspired. She slid the drawer closed and moved to the next cabinet.
