Jay got his start in the jewelry world while attending Denver University where he studied Literature and pitched for the DU baseball team. He opened J ALBRECHT DESIGNS with his wife Laina in 2004 with the idea of making, creating, and curating... not just schlepping cheap, mass produced goods. Jay believes jewelry should be of the best quality, made with a distinct point of view, and should be worn, loved and respected. Own and wear less jewelry, and have that jewelry be considered special and representative of not fad, but personal style and commemorative of life's special moments.
Not interested in talking shop when you're visiting with Jay in the store? Neither is he... he's open for book swaps and little league coaching advice. Forget the snob quality and the predictable mass produced jewelry of most jewelry stores. Expect a totally casual environment with Jay, no high pressure sales or stilted cliches.
Don't let his modesty and easy going personality fool you, Kenny is a highly skilled goldsmith with more than 18 years of goldsmithing and benchwork to his credit. He's worked with Jay (they are brothers-in-law) for the last 20 years, and is the foundation upon which the shop is built. Kenny's work is second to none. Meticulous, precise gold and platinum work with zero shortcuts. He uses modern technology and pairs it with his skill at old world, traditional metalsmithing and stone setting techniques.
When he's not at his bench, you can find Kenny shooting at the range or walking his little fox terrier, Roxy. He's also a talented drummer and tattoo artist. Mostly, though, Kenny's just a good guy who truly cares about his work and always gives his absolute best to his family & clients.
Laina came to Boulder to study film and literature at CU and never left... She had the idea with Jay to build a custom jewelry business that was meaningful, vibrant & sustainable. You will find Laina's hand in every aspect of the shop... stone buying, design, goldsmithing, webdesign... you name it. On her days off, you can find her running Boulder's trails or eating from a tub of popcorn at a matinee.
Chrissie came to the family by way of the UK and brought with her a wealth of jewelry making and design skills. She's a talented designer with a keen eye for detailed design. She's simply one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. Outside of the shop, you'll find Chrissie hunting for the best powder skiing, enjoying a hike or trying out new recipes.
Riley is a third-generation Boulder native and found jewelry through a love of fine mineral specimens and gem crystals. He's an avid collector and high-end mineral photographer. In the last year, Riley has been on the workbench perfecting various setting techniques and even mastered his first hand carving. His talent on the bench is limitless. On Riley's days off you’ll find him at gem shows, chasing powder, hiking with his dogs or throwing discs at the local disc golf course.
