18mm Ancient Coin with Wolf
Few images are as foundational to Rome’s origin story as the she-wolf. Struck in 77 BC as a silver denarius, this coin bears on its obverse the helmeted head of a Roman figure - steadfast and resolute. Turn it over and the she-wolf strides left, powerful and self-possessed, a reference to the myth of Romulus and Remus and the fierce maternal force said to have safeguarded the city’s founders.
Now set as a medallion, the denarius offers more than its finely struck silver surface. It carries the gravity of a civilization in transition, a tactile remnant of a Rome balancing myth and governance, ancestry and ambition. The she-wolf remains arresting in her movement, at once protective and untamed, while the helmeted portrait holds its composure across the centuries.
