Her day had been languid - pages turned poolside, a windblown motorbike to Atrani, a pair of earrings had caught her eye in a shop window just off the piazza. Ten minutes later they were hers.

Flushed from the August heat, and the thrill of her purchase, she had strolled the square with a peach granita in hand, conversations pausing as she passed unhurried and very, very pleased with herself.

Now, freshly napped and faintly perfumed, she crossed the hotel lobby.
