Venus Chain

She spent the morning wandering the steps of Ravello, discovering painted chapels tucked into hillsides, their walls cool and crumbling, lit by rows of flickering votives. Arched ceilings, sun-worn frescoes, the scent of lemon and salt hanging in the summer stillness. She moved in wonderment, lingering in doorways, fingers grazing old stone. She thought about the hands that had built these walls, and the ones that had returned, year after year, to light a candle, whisper a name. She imagined a proud succession of grandmothers and daughters, each carrying stories and traditions.

Around her neck, a textured gold chain, hand-woven in Vicenza, warmed against her skin. She’d chosen it earlier in her travels, drawn to its pattern of repetition. There was something reassuring in its construction: each link made by hand, each link depending on the next. Suddenly, acquiring it felt like less of an impulse and more like a promise to herself. A promise she would one day pass on.

As she climbed, so did the sun, higher, brighter - until her hat wilted and her thoughts gave way to thirst, and her search became one of relief. She slipped into the shade of a tiny café and ordered a sorbet. Limone. Tart and exhilarating.

Devoured it quickly, the sweet coolness chasing the heat from her aching legs and scorched shoulders. But her heart remained flushed and full. 

She closed her eyes and wondered. How she was ever meant to return to her other life.
