The greenhouse smelled of damp soil and Brandywine vines. Seed trays, terracotta pots with the patina of decades, and cuttings rooted in glass jars filled the shelves. She worked beside her husband, easing seedlings into fresh soil while he labeled each pot with a pencil worn nearly to the ferrule.

The chrysoberyl necklace rested at the hollow of her throat. The stone held the green of old glass bottles and young leaves. The intricate gold chain caught the filtered light as she bent over the potting table. He had fastened the clasp for her thousands of times. Neither looked up for several minutes. The scratch of pencil and the soft settling of soil into terracotta pots filled the space between them.
