Vitality Amulet with Ancient Itaglio

$10,500.00

This pendant is a singular piece of history, shaped by both ancient hands and contemporary craft. The Roman intaglio, carved between the first and third centuries CE, shows a goat gently grazing.  In Roman symbolism the goat conveyed vitality, abundance and agility. Intaglios of this era often served as seals or personal identifiers. It would have passed through many hands before reaching ours, carrying with it the marks of time and the imprint of human intention.

As jewelers and designers, setting an artifact like this is an experience that sits somewhere between stewardship and collaboration. The intaglio already contains its own narrative, formed in antiquity and preserved through centuries of movement, trade and private ownership. Our role is to frame it with respect, to build a piece that maintains the integrity of the engraving while bringing it into a contemporary context.

Pieces like this expand our Modern Treasures collection into new territory, inviting history directly into our design process. We are fascinated by imagining the journey this intaglio has taken from the ancient Mediterranean to our modern studio in Colorado.  This pendant is meant for someone who appreciates that duality and is filled with the same sense of wonder.
