An open book rested on her lap. She had not turned a page for several minutes. The sapphire on her hand held her attention instead. Its twinkling fuchsia facets caught the light from the long library window. The heavy 18k gold shank was as if a part of her hand. 

Around her, books climbed from floor to ceiling. Fossil specimens occupied the lower shelves. A tray of mineral crystals beside stacks of botanical journals. Orchids pressed against the windowpanes. She shifted her hand slightly - mesmerized - and reluctantly returned to her page.
