Ancient Ant Intaglio Ring

$11,570.00

Roman gem engravers favored carnelian for their seals, since hot wax lifts cleanly from its polished face. Sometime between the first and third centuries CE, one of them carved this fascinating little ant, reducing the creature to its essentials so that it would read clearly in wax. The Romans prized the ant as an emblem of diligence and thrift, and Virgil, describing Aeneas’s men hurrying their ships to sea from Carthage, compared them to ants carrying grain against the coming winter.

To wear this intaglio today is to take up that emblem. The ant is strength measured in persistence: foresight, industry, the discipline to build slowly and well. Its first owner pressed it into wax to seal letters and documents, letting the image stand in for a name. Few virtues have aged as gracefully.

For us as jewelers and designers, an artifact like this calls for stewardship first and invention second. The intaglio carries its own history, shaped in a Roman workshop and preserved through nearly two thousand years of travel and private ownership. We designed this ring with natural diamonds and Ceylon sapphires to pay homage to the humble insect, to frame it with joy, and return it to daily wear. We are its newest custodians and, we suspect, not its last.
