The house was filling with voices. A pie cooled on the kitchen counter. Garden roses and freshly clipped greenery crowded the sideboard. Through the dining room doorway, grandchildren moved chairs toward a long table while someone searched for the missing serving spoon. Upstairs, she stood before the mirror fastening her Merelani Garnet earrings.

The color was unmistakable. Over the years, the family had come to recognize them. They had appeared at christenings, graduations, hospital rooms, and performances.  More than one daughter and granddaughter had borrowed them. More than one had hoped they might someday become hers. She fastened the second earring and listened to the clamor from below. It would be another occasion for remembering.
