Her dressing room was devoted entirely to beauty. Silks hung from burnished brass hooks, velvet boxes with gold and gemstones spilling from every corner of the dressing table. Perfume bottles caught the light beneath the mirror. Small treasures gathered over decades filled the shelves. Beyond the doorway were her gardens, correspondence, and the practical demands of the day.

She fastened her diamond drops before the mirror and stepped back to consider the effect. The earrings shifted slightly as she turned her head, catching the light from different angles. More than one daughter had borrowed them. More than one granddaughter had laid claim.  Generations of women with an eye for beautiful things.
