She crossed the room slowly, pausing beside her shelf of rare books. Several volumes stood open on reading stands. A magnifying glass rested on a stack of auction catalogues. Beyond them, orchids crowded the window ledges, their roots twisting through clay pots and wire baskets. The afternoon passed there among the books, the specimens, and the flowers.
