17mm Ancient Coin with Bee
This pendant holds a silver drachm struck in Ephesos, Ionia, a city renowned in antiquity for the great Temple of Artemis - one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. At its center is the image of the bee, sacred to Artemis and emblem of the Melissai, her priestesses whose name means “honeybees.” For the people of Ephesos, the bee carried layered meaning: fruitfulness, abundance, and the mysterious harmony of the natural world. It was both a symbol of divine order and of life’s continual renewal, perfectly suited to a goddess associated with fertility and protection.
To wear such a pendant is to feel the very spirit of that city, where myth and daily life intertwined. Each drachm once moved through bustling markets and temples, a small vessel of silver that carried both value and belief. More than 2,400 years later, it endures; representing the persistence of culture, the artistry of ancient hands, and the silent testimony of time itself. An heirloom of the ancient world.
